Program: Soft skills for the job interview

Did you know that interviewers form their first impression of a candidate in about ten seconds?

Joan Bartel, author of Office Soft Skills, explains soft skills for job seekers: from how to make a positive first impression, to how to meet Canadian employers' expectations when answering interview questions.

As a Professor in Humber College's Occupation-specific Language Training program, she has helped hundreds of immigrants to improve their English and soft skills to become job-ready in Canada. Her interactive presentation this evening discusses the following:

• What are soft skills?
• Before the interview: getting started
• Greeting the interviewer
• Talking about your experience

Presenter: Joan Bartel

Joan has specialized in the interrelationship of culture and language and is the author of several ESL articles and books. Her most recent book, Office Soft Skills, now in its 2nd edition, is based on her cross-cultural experience in teaching ESL and managing language programs in three countries. She has an M.A. in Language Research and Canadian TESL and Career Counselling Certificates.
